Hanoi's Old Quarter is lively, cheap and full of character. It also has a handful of well-known tourist traps that are easy to dodge once you recognise them.

Good to know. This is general guidance compiled from widely reported traveler experiences. Prices, rules and risks change, and most people in Hanoi are honest and welcoming. Always check official local sources. See our disclaimer.

1. Rigged or look-alike taxis

How it works: Cabs painted to resemble a trusted brand, or meters that run too fast.

How to avoid it: Use a ride-hailing app, or pick a well-known company and check the name is spelled exactly as it should be. Ask the driver to start the meter in front of you.

2. Shoe-repair tricks

How it works: A stranger points at your sandals, "fixes" them with glue or thread, then demands a high price.

How to avoid it: Politely decline anyone who touches your shoes or points out a problem.

3. Photo-pole vendors

How it works: A vendor places a carrying pole or fruit basket on your shoulder for a photo and then asks for money.

How to avoid it: Keep your hands free and say no before anything is placed on you.

4. Counting the zeros

How it works: Vietnamese dong has many zeros, and notes such as 20,000 and 200,000 can be confused or swapped.

How to avoid it: Check each note as you hand it over, and pay with smaller notes when you can.

5. Copycat tour and cafe brands

How it works: Businesses that copy the name of a well-known tour operator, then sell something different.

How to avoid it: Book through the real website or a verified listing, and check the address on a map.

6. Cruise bait-and-switch

How it works: A cheap overnight cruise turns out to be a lower-standard boat than the pictures.

How to avoid it: Pay attention to very recent reviews, and book through a reputable operator.
